Animal Webaction visited the site 02 August 2020 and confirms the situation described below.
"Our main issue managing the rescue is simply keeping the animals alive. Our main concern is to keep providing them with food, which is really the largest problem. Even all other matters such as medicine and vaccination are not as important as food.
We have no food stock, we can only buy small amount, as we go. Food is really expensive and vets do not give us any discount on food packages. So we try to take left over bread from the bakery or even boil pasta and mix it up with dog food to keep feeding the dogs, and some days we have to give them less food already.
We have a very urgent need for food, we can't reach a point where we have no food at all ! "
"The dogs are so many, we have lost count. We haven’t got enough space to shelter any more dogs. It is really difficult for us. We have to keep a balance. If a dog is adopted another one will take his place.
So we also take care of more than 31 street dogs in the area of Stomio, Agios Dimitrios, Terpsithea and a lot of others that we’ve lost count at Filiatra and at the port of Kyparissia.
In case we have no food the dogs will starve. Moreover they will be more aggressive towards us and each other. We already have to keep some of them tied up, to avoid the worst. Fights will begin and they will end up killing each other."
"Zoe was found almost dead in the street near Diavolitsi village. Her paws were shattered and she had many wounds from Kalazar (leishmaniosis) disease. She had lost all of her fur and a lot of weight and she was in need of immediate medical care.
She has been in the shelter for the past six months and just two weeks ago she managed to stand and walk on her own. She has gained some weight but she remains weak, she will need good food and leishmaniosis treatment for the rest of her life."
"There is only us three. We have no personal life, no time and no money for anything else. It is really hard to do this everyday. You return home in the evening and try to relax and the phone rings and some new dogs need your help so you start all over again.
Our psychology is very bad because of this, our personal lives as well. On an economic level it is also very demanding, we don’t go out for a coffee or a drink with friends because we want to save our money for more dog food.
We're lucky and grateful for a few friends and friendly organisations to help out whenever they can, but it is far from enough. Summer time is especially difficult, as all dogs need extra care, there are diseases and this makes the cost even bigger for us."
"We help one another but there is no help from anyone else here. Even our families fight us in this. Caring and providing for the strays is something that comes from our heart but it is hard for anyone else to understand.
People judge us, call us dirty or crazy but when a stray is in need they call us. Everyone treats us in a bad way. It is expected of us to help every dog in need, even the ones who already come from a home.
Food is the main problem. Medicine is also very important but if we get food covered then we would be able to take care of the rest on our own."
Animal Webaction has a logistic centre in Greece, which enables us to intervene quickly and deliver kibbles.
"There is a large reduction in donations, it is clearly noticeable. We buy food and pay for medicine and medical procedures out of our own pocket already, as much as we can.
The number of dogs always grows. And it is not only food that costs a lot. Medicine and vaccination is a great expense that cannot be overlook or avoided. The present situation is really difficult."
When a campaign fails, Animal Webaction cannot deliver the collected products, the organizer receives nothing and the buyers are refunded.
