Animal Webaction visited the site 15 August 2020 and confirms the situation described below.
Animal Webaction cannot be held responsible for dog deaths due to the absence of kibble. Why ?
"We run the shelter with donations only, we've no help from fondations or other organizations, in Morocco or abroad. We've contacted a few but never received any reply.
Right now things are tight, it feels like the whole industry of rescue and foster and adoption is on hold, everybody is waiting for this global pandemic to work itself out. People are telling us they can’t donate more, people are telling us they’re suffering.
Our main issues managing the shelter are the lack of food and money. We try very much to be independent, but in this time particularly, our numbers have grown, we've never been so much in debt, we've never had so many animals. All our time is devoted to helping the animals on the field, so it also means we’re not able to do a lot of stuff online either to attract new potential donors. It's honestly the most stressful time we’ve had in years..."
"We are rescuing and rehabilitating animals from the streets, whether they’ve been abandoned or they’ve grown up on the streets. Every animal we have in the shelter is coming because of an accident or an injury.
We have many sick dogs that need to be fed twice a day, sometimes 3 times a day, puppies 4 times a day. Without food their health is going to deteriorate, and could die...We're really worried about the lack of food, our job is to alleviate the suffering of the animals in the region, and if we don't find kibble soon...then we're not doing our jobs.
However worthy our goals are, we are limited, because we’re just a small group of people trying to help. And right now people have less money so they’re giving less. We need your help!!"
"Janelle has been at the shelter for about a month. We took her in after she had been hit by a car in Agadir. She had a really swollen, obviously broken back leg, and was unable to walk. We kept her in isolation and gave her anti-inflammatory and pain meds until the swelling went down. Now her leg has started to heal but she still has a limp, she’s still learning how to walk again.
She’s really shy and didn’t want to be touched when I rescued her, I had to cover her with a towel. She’s learning to interact with other humans. She's still terribly underweight and fragile. A lack of food would definitely greatly impact her recovery . Kibble is a must for her!"
"We’re not new but we’re a donation only charity, all of us give up our time to be here, we don’t have another source of income except for donations.
We have debts at the vet, debts for our car rental, debts at our general store, debts with our truck driver, debts with our overheads like electricity and water, we have debts with the people we buy kibble from, we have debts everywhere! We are just debts right now, only our rent is paid...
I think right now it’s tough for everybody, I think people are frightened about the future, about their own security, which means they are holding on to their spare money which we understand and we would do the same, but we are not in a position to hold on to anything. My current state of mind ? I’m exhausted and I’m exhausted. I'm exhausted..."
"We created the organization because of a need in the region. The animals were suffering and we couldn’t just sit on our hands and watch anymore. Here, not many local people care for the strays, because they are afraid, so they throw rocks, they kick them, they scream, they lay poison...
The government is also part of the problem. They keep poisoning and shooting street dogs, thinking it'll decimate the population and make the problem go away. When they do that, all the sudden the population is low, but of course, new mothers have their puppies hidden. And so the puppies grow up and suddenly there is a new group in town again...
The key is to sterilize the dogs, which is what we try to do. We sterilize and vaccinate them and put them back on their territory if they are healthy enough, so that they are an agent of change and a security agent against rabies among the human and animal population."
Animal Webaction has a logistic platform in Morocco which allows us to intervene quickly and deliver kibbles throughout the country.
"We can’t cope because we have so many animals and so few people and no access to funding... People everywhere are struggling and so we are struggling too. Because everything we do, rests on the back of our donators and supporters. If they suffer we suffer.
We have also have less volunteers because such a large percentage of our volunteers are from outside of morocco, so we have less hands to help. Our situation is really pressing, we need help to feed the dogs!"
When a campaign fails, Animal Webaction cannot deliver the collected products, the organizer receives nothing and the buyers get a refund.
