Animal Webaction visited the site 18 August 2020 and confirms the situation described below.
"There are 160 dogs at Targu Frumos' pound at the moment, and around 20 streets dogs outside that I feed. I also have 25 dogs at home, mainly puppies. I keep them with me so they don't catch diseases like the parvovirus.
The municipality can only cover 3 bags of food per day for the dogs at the pound, but to eat enough, they need at least 6. So I try to organise fundraisings to pay for the remaining food, for vaccines and sterilizations and construction works, like building cages.
Over the years, I've managed to build a network that helps me but right now, I am running out of funds and I have to spend my own money. At the moment, there's food left until September 1st. We have to act quick."
"Fall is coming and once it gets cold and the harvest is done, people abandon the dogs in the field so I know we will have even more than what we have right now, it happens every year.
When donations are low, as it's the case at the moment, I try to buy kibble from my own pocket but I cannot afford to keep doing it forever, the dogs are just too many, it's too much money. Occasionally is ok, but on the long term it's not possible.
Restaurants do not want to help, bread factories and farms do not want to help as they say they use every part of the remaining products.I don't know what else to do right now... If I don't find kibble soon, the dogs will either die of starvation or get violent with each other. If that happens, the municipality will euthanize them..."
"Mama's a street dog, we took her in around 2 months ago, when we were informed that she was giving birth in front of a block of flats. We knew we needed to put her in a safe place.
She is still nursing her 6 puppies, she needs a lot of food. Any lack of food would be very detrimental to her. If not fed, she might start eating her babies."
"The municipality allocates some money towards the vet, they pay Gica's salary (the only employee there), and the water. Anything else has to be collected by other means.
Every month is a struggle to find the necessary food. It is mostly day to day fight for surviving...There are not many people donating, businesses have closed...The town is small and people were left out of jobs, so they barely have money for their own bills.
This is a relatively poor area, people lack the education the empathy and the financial means to help. But I think that what they lack more is education to be honest.. I divide my life between my job, my family and the pound, campaigns, driving the dogs everywhere to the doctors, begging for food and leftovers from restaurants. It is difficult but I will continue to do so, for the dogs' welfare."
"I started saving dogs and bringing them to my home about 10 years ago. When I first started, I used to cry every day, now I am used to see dogs in different states, shapes, conditions and try to take it as it is.
I have to admit though I wanted to give up a few years ago when I got pregnant with my son but the dogs needed me; people kept asking me to get back and volunteer at the pound because they were not well kept, did not have enough food, and nobody helped with adoptions.
So I decided to continue, because it's my duty and my calling. Now I have created a network and at least 6-12 dogs are leaving for adoption in different parts of Europe at the moment. If I leave, this will stop. This is what I fear the most. That if I really give up volunteering one day, the dogs will be put down because the town hall will not help with anything..."
