Animal Webaction visited the site 15 December 2020 and confirms the situation described below.
"Chucky has many scars on his face and a broken leg, we think it's because he regularly fights with other dogs over food.
He lives on the street, next to the railway. It's a very busy road, cars are always passing through. It's a really dangerous environment because when there’s no food, he crosses the street and risks being hit by a car at any moment. To make matters worse, Chucky is already very skinny... He needs kibble to survive."
"The situation of stray dogs is very hard here in Tetouan. People don't care about them at all, they always neglect them, or don't pay them any attention. I wish people would be nicer to them...I also wish the government would stop the killing campaigns...
But until then, all I can do is try to take care of them to the best of my ability, which, at the moment, is greatly diminished... The pandemic has made our situation very unstable : sometimes we receive donations, sometimes we don’t...There's a big lack of food, the stock we have left at the moment will only last a few more days.
People keep asking me to feed new dogs in the street in certain areas, but I cannot help them anymore. The situation worries me a lot because these dogs need us. A lot of them are already very skinny, they won't survive without help."
"The number of dogs at the shelter keeps on increasing but unfortunately, our resources don't! We lack funds in all areas : funds for the sterilizations, the surgeries, the vet visits, the food...
The lack of food is in fact our biggest issue at the moment. We are running out of kibble and we have a lot of dogs in need at the shelter. The sick dogs need even more food than others to recover. I'm afraid that if I don't find food soon, the sick ones will lose weight and become even sicker, and possibly not make it...I'm scared the other ones will become aggressive and start fighting over food...
Even though more people keep asking me to take more dogs, I cannot accept or help more at the moment, I cannot focus on other important missions, I can only focus on finding food for them. I feel sadness, hopeleness and frustration thinking about the situation."
"Daisy has been in the shelter for 12 days. She used to live in Fnideq, about an hour away from Tetouan. A lady who was feeding her from time to time called me to let me know how sick she was.
It's very clear that Daisy was mistreated in the past, it shows in the way she behaves. We had a hard time rescuing her because of that, she was very fearful.
Daisy is very sick, she has severe case of scabies, she can barely move... Without kibbles and without treatment, her condition will worsen and might even develop into something even more severe like Leishmania."
"Even though lockdown is now over, we are still in emergency state so the pandemic is still showing its effects. Many people have lost their job or had a loss of income this year.
Of course, that means the donations I receive are fewer, and they're not enough to help me cover all the expenses. My personal funds aren't sufficient either, unfortunately...
I have debts at the the veterinarian clinic (operations, sterilizations, etc.), debts at the pharmacy (medication)...The only shelter in the whole city of Tetouan is ours, these dogs are dependent on our actions, they need us... They need food"
"I've always loved animals, but I really started getting involved in 2015, when I realized couldn’t find a single association who took care of dogs and cats in Tetouan.
5 years on, my actions are still very necessary to protect these animals from all kind of physical abuse, killing, diseases, and hunger...The truth of the matter is, if anyone complains about a dog to the municipality, they will come take the dog, and kill it.
The only solution they have for these poor dogs are bullets. They don’t give any help whatsoever : no food, no medication nothing, just death!"
Animal Webaction has a logistic platform in Morocco which allows us to intervene quickly and deliver kibbles throughout the country.
"Unlike other countries, animal shelters in Morocco don't receive any financial help from the government. I don't have any sponsors either except for the other ADAN branch in Rabat, which helps me occasionnally.
It's very hard to continue without any external help, our resources are limited, and it's impacting our actions for the animals. We do our best so the dogs always eat enough, but it's not always possible unfortunately. The Animal Webaction campaigns help us a lot, we need your help to keep going."
When a campaign fails, Animal Webaction cannot deliver the collected products, the organizer receives nothing and the buyers get a refund.
