"In order to survive during winter, stray dogs need to warm up, and in order to warm up, they need energy, for that they need more food in quantity and in quality. Unfortunately, right now I can only afford to give them the cheapest type of kibble on the market, which is very poor quality... And there's only enough in my storage room to last a couple of more days...
Many of the stray dogs I've saved over the years would have died in terrible conditions if I hadn't been able to help them. To this day, my biggest wish is still to help every single dog I come upon, especially now as there is an increasing number of molested, abandoned, sick and hungry dogs everywhere...
But newly admitted dogs also need to be treated, vaccinated, fed... And it's impossible for me to achieve all these things at the moment due to lack of resources...I need help."
"Mica is a 3-year-old female stray. I've been looking after her for around 6 months now. She was abandoned with her siblings as puppies, they were found near Lazarevac. We do not know what happened to her siblings, but she survived.
She was hit by a truck and can now only see from one eye. She is in a constant danger because her vision is reduced and she lives near the coal mining basin Kolubara and its machines. Mica is fragile and she relies on us to bring her food. If we can no longer do it, she would have to travel further outside her area to try and look for some, which could be deadly for her."
"Although it is true that the dogs in my shelter have a roof over their heads, they also need more food during the winter season. The dropping temperatures, the snow... it affects them too. The uncertainty of being able to feed them for the coming period really devastates me.
I know my dogs need to eat and I know that they count on me to feed them daily, as I always have... It is my duty to feed them. But I'm genuinely worried I won't be able to do it this time... Many of the people who used to help me can no longer do it, and I do not have enough resources to cover all the expenses.
If I cannot feed them, the dogs could become aggressive and start harming each other, or even worse, kill each other. The sick dogs might also become sicker... The dogs could starve... If any of these things happen, it means I would have failed to care for them, and I would blame myself forever for it... It is very hard to look after so many dogs on my own."
"Tora is a 6-month-old female, she has been in the shelter for 5 months now. We found her near Lazarevac with her mother and siblings. Tora's front leg was ripped off and unfortunately, there was no other way to save her but to amputate her leg.
Thankfully she learned how to live with only three legs and is currently a happy dog. But she is still only a puppy, she needs food in order to experience a normal growth and avoid developping any health issues"
"The pandemic has caused many difficulties, many people have lost their job and their income, including myself. I lost 2 months of income, and received far fewer donations than usual, which, all combined, deeply hindered my actions to care for the dogs.
One of the bigger problems was also the closed borders between countries. Agencies from the UK and France that always used to help me with adoptions were unable to do it. The dogs whose adoptions were already planned were stuck in my shelter, until the borders were open again for a short while. That resulted in more food expenses, as I kept finding and rescuing more dogs on the streets in the meantime.
I was forced to go into debt in order to provide food for the dogs... I am in debt to a couple of vets and pet shops. My total debt is around 1600 euros...For Christmas, one organisation did help me with a small food supply but that lasted only 2 days."
"In Serbia the situation with dogs right now and with animals in general, is terrifying. Dogs are treated badly, there are multiple cases of dogs chained to the tree with their water bowls empty. Stray dogs are often beaten and chased away and that's why many of them have trust issues.
I hope that in time, people’s awareness will be raised concerning these animals and I hope that more people will consider adopting stray dogs. There are so many dogs in need of love and safety!
I also wish sterilization would become a more widespread practice, and that people would be more educated on the matter. Sterilisation is key if we want to decrease the number of stray dogs in the long run..."
Animal Webaction has a logistic centre directly in Serbia, which enables us to intervene quickly and deliver kibbles.
"Everybody has been hit by the pandemic. People that used to help the association are unable to continue because many have lost their jobs. Likewise, many organizations were not able to help, being deeply impacted themselves.
With the increasing numbers of abandoned dogs on the streets, all these factors make it really hard for us to continue rescuing animals without exterior help."
