Animal Webaction visited the site 07 January 2021 and confirms the situation described below.
"In the 10 years that I have been looking after cats in Morocco, this is the first time I have seen so many cats in the streets. With the health crisis, a lot of animals have been abandoned. They were of course not sterilised so births have continued in the meantime...
Cats are finding less and less food on their own and for me, the increase in the number of cats has multiplied everything in terms of expenses. I buy bags of kibble on credit from time to time, when I manage to pay off some of my debts, otherwise the shop owner no longer agrees to sell me some...
I don't have any dry or wet food left and I can't buy any more for the moment because I don't even have 1 euro for myself... The cats don't eat enough... They are starving. I need this collection to succeed because you are the little glimmer of hope I have left... Without this help, these cats are doomed because I am the only person who feeds them."
"When the cats don't find food and they can't find me in the evening, automatically they go everywhere to find some. Every night when I can't feed them, I'm sure I'll find 1 or 2 dead the next day...
Among those who survive, many are injured because of the adjacent boulevard and the speeding cars. These cats are my priority but it's very hard, I'm not going to lie. Because of my current lack of resources, there are many animals in distress that I cannot help.
If I don't find a way to feed them soon, the deaths will continue and as for me, I really risk sinking into depression... I feel like a failure because I tell myself that I have to take on this job, I have been feeding them for several years and they are waiting for me!"
"Louloutte is a young female, around one year old. She lives in a garage near my residence. She was pregnant and gave birth to her young on the evening of the visit.
In addition to the 3 kittens she gave birth to, she also takes care of 3 more kittens, because their mother died crushed by a car, probably because she was looking for food...
Louloutte needs her strength to take care of all these little ones and to be kept safe herself. There's no one to feed her in this garage so if I can't feed her, she'll go further away and might end up crushed to death on the boulevard..."
"I think the drop in donations is mainly related to COVID, because many people are left without a salary. But also because my association is recent, it is not very well known and so automatically I don't receive enough donations. For example, this month I received 56 euros.
I finance almost everything with my salary but unfortunately it is not enough. I have a salary of 420 euros with a rent of 280 euros: after paying the water, electricity and telephone bill, I don't have much left...
Between hospitalisation, surgeries, medicines, food for street cats and the 28 I have at home, I can't get by and I have debts everywhere: more than 930 euros at the vet's, 50 euros at the grocery store... Without a chain of hearts for these animals, we won't be able to save them".
"In Morocco, there is a suffering of animals which is indifference. In the eyes of the people, it's as if they don't exist. To be honest, the government doesn't do anything either, but at least some laws now prohibit slaughter.
This being said, as long as sterilisations are not carried out on a large scale, we will not be able to eradicate the problem of overpopulation of strays, and the human-cat cohabitation will not be able to take place properly. At present, new births almost systematically lead to poisoning and disappearances...
In my opinion, sterilisations are the solution to the problem. I try to do 2 or 3 per month but it's very hard and I have huge debts to the vet. It is true that today I am in crisis, but I am very happy that I was able to save what little I could, and I will continue to do so because it is part of me, these cats are my whole life".
Animal Webaction has a logistic platform in Morocco which allows us to intervene quickly and deliver kibbles throughout the country.
"I don't think people can help more at the moment because of COVID. Indeed, most of my donors are in France and Belgium and with this containment and this pandemic, everything has been disrupted. Nevertheless, I have hope because I tell myself that the containment situation will eventually come to an end...
I have made contact with associations abroad but they cannot help me because they prioritise helping shelters that have a lot of animals and do not take care of street animals.
In any case, one thing is sure, I won't be able to continue managing everything on my own because alone we can't achieve anything... I have this love for animals and I must continue, when I see a cat outside they are mine and I must protect and feed them".
When a campaign fails, Animal Webaction cannot deliver the collected products, the organizer receives nothing and the buyers get a refund.
