Animal Webaction visited the site 13 January 2021 and confirms the situation described below.
"There are a lot of abandoned dogs in Prijedor as well as in surrounding cities. We get calls on daily basis to take new dogs, even from towns that are hundreds of kilometres away. We try to help as many as possible by trying to move every dog that is in the street to our shelter, because if dog catchers take them, they are dead...
Our priorities are always hurt dogs, sick dogs, mums with puppies, puppies alone etc... At the moment we have 250 dogs at the shelter, some with disabilities, some with chronic illnesses, some with trust issues –we take care of them all, without distinction.
Our biggest problem is financial, we never know if we will be able to have enough for the next month. The biggest fear we have is that we won’t be able to provide dogs with proper food and care. At this moment our stock of food will last 10 to 15 days maximum. They have to have enough food because we want to keep them fed and happy. If they are hungry, they get nervous, if they are nervous, they might get in fight, and we cannot allow that to happen..."
"The more dogs we manage to save, the better. Because if it weren’t for us, all the abandoned dogs would end up in the killing shelter in Kurevo dying the most horrific death, or being slaughtered by some idiots; all the puppies would end up abandoned in forest, or thrown in the river.
In our country, animal welfare is completely marginalized. The authorities do not fund animal welfare shelters, they only fund death shelters...We are funded solely through donations of good people and although our community has allowed us to manage so far, the pandemic has now disrupted everything.
We are the only thing that stands between the dogs and death, torture and pain. That is why we need more help and more people involved. If we don’t have food, the dogs will start to become nervous, get in fights, then get sick and then god knows what... We will do everything possible not to allow this to happen. It makes me nauseated only thinking about it..."
"Stevie is a long hair Istrian hunting dog, and he was given to us. Actually, here in the neighborhood while we were passing with our car a hunter stopped us and said: "Do you want to take this dog? I tried to kill him three times and he survived. I do not know if I should waste my bullets on him. If you do not want to take him, I will kill him."
He gave the dog with a head full of buckshot, and that is why he went blind. He was only seven months old when this arrived, and the owner wanted to kill him because he realized he wasn't a good hunting dog...So we took him to the vet to take out the bullets. Luckily his healing process did not take much time, but of course he remains blind and he's more vulnerable than others."
"Over the years I've noticed that January and February are the worst months for donations. Right now, the drop of donations is huge. We try to live off the donations we got in the past months, but it is very tough. More generally speaking, ever since the pandemic started, donations have dropped by a huge amount.
Until now, a partner organization in Milan called “Prijedor Emergency” was helping us with everything that was needed, but since Italy was hit very hard by the pandemic, they cannot help us as much as they used to.
People are out of jobs, the economy is crashing, people have died and others have lost everything during the past 10 months... Those are very challenging times that we are living, everywhere around the world. Even if some people might have some extra money, they are saving it as the future is very uncertain."
"I have devoted the past 8 years of my life to helping and saving animals. I have been an activist for different causes but this vocation found me and became part of me. To be honest, I cannot remember my life before this. I've invested everything I had in this shelter, it was built with blood, sweat and tears; and we built it as home, so that the dogs who stay with us for long period of time or for the shy and wild ones who are not adoptable, so they can be happy and healthy. That's my proudest accomplishment.
Still I have to say that working with animals, especially with abandoned animals, trying to save them from a primitive environment, where, it's "normal" to kill a dog because "you do not need them anymore" is extremely stressful and challenging. I have seen horrible monstrosities happen to animals in our area. I have seen human monsters get out of it, without any punishment.
But I never allowed myself despair because I am strong believer in harmony, in universe, and that for every monstrosity there will be punishment, that after the rain, there must be a rainbow. This is what keeps me going and not falling into depression."
Animal Webaction has a logistic platform in Bosnia which allows us to intervene quickly and deliver kibbles.
"I tried reaching out to several organizations, but the answer was always the same: we are swamped with requests, we cannot help you at the moment, pandemic is causing lack of money etc etc.
The other issue that occurred was that people were getting out of job, businesses were destroyed. We lost a lot of regular donations and help.
We have few wishes for our shelter. But the biggest wish we have is to keep our dogs safe, that they never lack food or anything they need to be happy and healthy."
