"The municipal pound is located near the mountains, there is a lot of humidity, a lot of wind, it's absolutely freezing here in winter. Given these conditions, the dogs need to eat much more than usual in order to keep themselves warmer and well... survive.
Unfortunately, we do not have a constant supply of food, it's our main issue. The municipality cannot provide it so that's what myself and two other volunteers (Ajla and Dalila) try to do. We do our best to raise funds to be able to feed the 100 dogs, but it has been getting harder and harder since the beginning of the pandemic.
Right now the dogs are eating the cheapest food on the market, and we only have enough left for another couple of days...I am very scared because these 100 souls depend on us. We cannot let them starve."
"The overcrowdedness and the setup of the pound do not help alleviate tensions between the dogs. But the biggest disrupter is definitely the lack of food. When food runs out, they become aggressive and fights happen. The quality of the food they receive plays a big role in that as well. Lower quality food has a negative impact on their mood and their overall health condition.
Unfortunately, cheap food in small amounts is all we've been able to afford for a while, and the dogs have already started to fight because of it. In fact, one dog was just attacked the other day... He had to be taken to the vet and is now taking antibiotics because his wounds are infected.
If we don't manage to find a new stock of kibble, aggressiveness among the dogs will only increase and the dogs will end up killing one another. I'm terrified just thinking about it..."
"Riki is a 7-year-old male. His owner no longer wanted him so we brought him to the shelter around 2 years ago. Riki is an older dog, compared to the others ones at the pound. He is slow paced and submissive. We have to be extra cautious with him otherwise the other dogs could attack him at any time.
If the lack of food lasts and it came down to this, Riki definitely wouldn't be able to compete over food with others. It would be a tragedy. We need to secure food for him as he's among the weakest dogs there."
"With the pandemic and the successive lockdowns that happened here in Bosnia, transports and human circulation in general has reduced by a lot. Gradually, people have stopped coming around the shelter and for us, this has meant fewer and fewer direct opportunities to get people involved.
People's incomes have been deeply impacted as well so there are no donations, no funding. The insecurity is felt everywhere. People have their own problems and fears to deal with, so they show less interest. Every time , it is harder and harder to raise money.
There is no help from the government and no solution on the way. I am feeling really bad, as I am pregnant and in about one month I will give birth. I just hope we will manage this action and get enough food so I can deliver my baby without fearing that the dogs will starve... "
"My involvement in animal protection started 7 years ago, when dog catchers took a dog from my street. It really impacted me and I tried to find that dog in all shelters around Sarajevo. When, looking for that dog, I saw the situation at the Zunovnica pound, I was broken-hearted.
I couldn’t stop thinking about all the dogs I saw there... At that time, the living conditions at the pound were terrible : the dogs were stuffed in dirty cages, covered in excrements, deaths were very common and nobody was doing anything to even try to prevent it.
Ajla, Dalila and myself did everything to get access to the pound and we have been helping for 4 years now. We are the proudest when we see the dogs happy in their forever homes, this is what keeps us going. But for the ones who are staying at the pound, our duty is to keep them as happy and healthy as possible. That's why we need exterior help."
Animal Webaction has a logistic platform in Bosnia, which allows us to intervene quickly and deliver kibbles.
"This situation with the pandemic made it hard for us and the dogs. Although Ajla, Dalila and myself do our very maximum to find donations and provide food for the dogs at the pound, it feels like every fundraiser is getting harder than the last, especially since COVID began.
People are helping less and less and we are terrified to lose even more donors. It is extremely stressful to know that so many lives depend on our fundraising efforts, and that the dogs could suffer horrible consequences if we failed.
We are extremely grateful for the help Animal Webaction has been giving us over the years, and we want to believe that with the help of good people, we can make it happen again and secure food for the 100 souls that need us."
When a campaign fails, Animal Webaction cannot deliver the products. The organizer doesn't receive anything and the buyers are refunded.
