"Our shelter, which was funded in 2003, aims at taking care of unwanted and forsaken dogs with dignity, for the rest of their life. Many of our dogs are old or ill and will never get adopted because people prefer puppies.
In 2019, the monthly funding we were receiving from an art charity was unfortunately stopped for good. This financial disruption put the shelter in a very difficult situation! Then the pandemic arrived, making the situation even worse, by preventing us from conducting collections.
At present, we have barely 10 days' worth of food left with the kibble we have. We don't know how we are going to be able to keep on feeding the 40 dogs who rely on us... What will become of them? We are terrified by the upcoming shortage of kibble ..."
"As most of our dogs are ageing or suffering from illnesses (stomach problems, painful joints, etc.), they often have very expensive treatments to take.
Unfortunately, donations are scarcer than ever, and we can no longer afford to pay all the veterinary bills. Without their treatment and with the lack of kibble, the dogs' health is likely to deteriorate drastically... The situation will go from bad to worse! "
"Falco is an 11 year old dog, who was about to be euthanised because of behavioural problems that made him unadoptable (he can't stand being touched). We took him in to save him from this fate, and today he has finally settled in our shelter.
But he only trusts people he knows well and therefore remains unadoptable despite our efforts. Falco will most certainly spend the rest of his life in the shelter... We owe him the chance to live a life where he will not suffer from a lack of food!
Not to mention the fact that he has lots of digestive problems: without good quality kibble, he gets very sick and quickly runs out of strength. With the impending food shortage, we don't know how Falco will cope... We are terrified that he will get sick again! "
"I started to get intensely involved in animal welfare work at the age of 26, after witnessing laboratory experiments on cats and dogs. This marked me for the rest of my life and was the trigger for my fight.
Over the years, people started leaving their pets with me and my home alone was not enough to take them all in. So I called on the Bourdon association, which generously agreed to help me take over the SAM shelter in 2003. But two years ago, after the death of Mr Bourdon, the funding was definitively stopped.
Since then, we have been struggling to keep the shelter afloat, but the situation has become too difficult. Without sufficient financial means, we cannot work miracles... We are very worried about the future of the shelter's dogs! "
