Animal Webaction visited the site 20 March 2021 and confirms the situation described below.
"We currently have 148 dogs in the shelter, their number has been constantly increasing over the past months. There are particularly many abandoned dogs now, I think people threw them onto the streets during the lockdown... It is sad. At the same time, donations have decreased, and we are struggling with food.
A lack of food can lead to aggression among the dogs, slower development of puppies, and problems with health. I do everything I can to make sure we don't run out of kibble, and I buy the cheapest kibble I can find. Despite my efforts, we only have 6 bags left, which will last us about three days.
My biggest concern is food, always. I feel sad, worried and powerless in this situation. I go to bed every day with the fear that I may not be able to get more food... I cannot let that happen, I am responsible for the dogs."
"A large number of dogs have health problems here. Many of them went through difficult situations in life and that left long-lasting effects on them... There are dogs that are very old, dogs that are disabled, dogs that have had surgery because of tumors and cysts, others hit by cars...
A lack of food would mean that their health deteriorates further. The old and sick dogs may not be able to survive such a situation at all.
I am fighting to get food because no dog should suffer, no matter if the dog is sick, old, disabled or completely healthy. There must be food. I will turn the world upside down, but I have to get food."
"Habibi is four years old and has been with us for three months now. She had been hit by a car when we found her, and suffered substantial injuries. We arranged to get a wheelchair to make it easier for her to move as she is disabled.
She is currently in a stable health condition, but requires special care and attention. She regularly goes to the vet for check-ups. Due to this recent accident and the effects it had, she is still fragile and especially vulnerable to a lack of food."
"Donations have decreased drastically due to the pandemic. All those who used to help the shelter, both individuals and organizations, now no longer have the funds... Many people have lost their jobs, and the crisis has impacted all spheres. It is not easy for anyone.
It is very difficult to find funding for food, and it requires a lot of dedication and sacrifice to run a shelter. I use my personal funds, and I spend every dinar I have on food, but it is never enough.
We have a lot of sick dogs, and we already owe the vet 2000 euros, which is a lot. I could not even pay the electricity bill last month, and I had to borrow further 1000 euros to buy food. There was no other option but to make more debts, and I don't see a way out of this situation... That's why we need help so much."
"My desire to help animals and my love for them has always existed in me, from when I was a child. Over time, that desire and necessity to help grew into this shelter for dogs: Helping and rescuing the dogs requires space, so I bought a house and started building for that purpose.
Shelters like mine are very important and we need as many of them as possible, because someone has to help the endangered dogs on the street, take them to the vet, take care of them, and try to have them adopted. There are many dogs in need, and there are not enough people who are willing to help them.
It is my life's calling to rescue dogs, and I enjoy it even though I encounter all sorts of problems and challenges that I have to deal with every day. We who found shelters can never be independent and do everything ourselves though, regardless of our desire and devotion... we need the help of other people."
Animal Webaction has a logistic centre directly in Serbia, which enables us to intervene quickly and deliver kibbles.
"We sometimes receive donations that cover food for a week or two, if we are lucky, but that is rare. Some dogs have sponsors, but that is a very small number compared to how many dogs currently live in the shelter.
I have tried to reach out to other organizations for help, but their answer is always that they are sorry and that they are not able to help at the moment. I believe them, because the pandemic has left a big mark on them as well.
We also have fewer dogs in foster care now due to the pandemic, and I am afraid the dogs currently in the shelter will never get adopted due to their ages and health condition... People usually want puppies. We have many worries, and my biggest out of all is how I will get dog food."
