Animal Webaction visited the site 25 March 2021 and confirms the situation described below.
"The pandemic has impacted our donations – people are losing jobs or opportunities to work so it is getting harder and harder to make ends meet. As a consequence, we don’t have any revenue to buy kibbles for our 200 dogs and we struggle to provide them with even the basic food: as of today we have kibbles for 5 days only.
We have very old dogs, sick dogs, dogs saved from dog fighting rings who are so distrusful they will never get adopted... All will probably stay with us until the end of their lives and we have to provide them with a safe future.
And yet with no kibble they will soon grow dissatisfied and start seeing each other as threats for their own survival. We really want to avoid them getting into fights, but it is uncertain for how long we can keep things under control if we go on like this."
"It is getting pretty hard because the number of dogs on the streets is rising constantly. First there is the lack of conscience, with people leaving dogs in front of the shelter or on the streets, fields, industrial zones, railway stations, landfills, everywhere, for outrageous reasons.
Then there is the pandemic, we get calls on a daily basis to help dogs whose owners passed or whose owners have lost their jobs and cannot take care of their dogs anymore. We try to save as many as possible, but dozens of dogs have come to us from similar situations, and there are just too few of us and so much work...
But if we don’t help the dogs, no one will. They will end up in the death pound, or being tortured or starved to death. We are the only ones standing between death and the dogs. If we have to stop working because we can't feed our dogs, there will be no one to save them anymore."
"Asia is a 3-year-old dog who came to us 3 months ago with epileptic seizures, caused by skull fracture and concussion. She had been used for illegal dog fights and she was thrown out when she got injured.
She couldn’t stand on her feet for days and we had to provide her with proper vet care. She will now need food for positive reinforcement, to work on her behaviour and put past her sad history, and to build strength, as she is still recovering."
"We really struggle with finances due to the pandemic. Our association is funded exclusively out of donations of good people, which have been reduced tenfold because people are afraid for their future and are quite reluctant to donate.
The few in-kind donations we received through our food collection boxes in the last 3 months weren't enough to cover even one week of kibble consumption and we don’t get funding from the local authorities, they exclusively fund the public dog pound, which kills dogs.
We sometimes go into debt just to provide the basic things and even that is hard since no one will trust you enough to give you anything in advance... People sometimes don’t understand how overwhelming the job is, working with 200 dogs at the shelter, and how much money is required to provide for the ones we have, let alone new ones."
"I started saving dogs in 2013. At first, it was an informal group of people, then in 2018 we registered an association and in 2020 we registered a shelter for dogs. Today, we have 200 dogs with 10 active volunteers, each one with 5 to 6 additional dogs in foster care.
We help animals not only in Prijedor but also in all surrounding towns, never picking up who we are going to save. It is hard to cope with the stress of knowing what monstrosities people are capable of and yet we are giving our best to save all the dogs that need help..."
Animal Webaction has a logistic platform in Bosnia which allows us to intervene quickly and deliver kibbles.
"We tried to contact many organisations, but we were denied help because they already have too many appeals and cannot help us due to a lack of donations.
Social media postings do not always work either, people get involved for really endangered dogs, but when we make appeals for food and general welfare, we usually don’t get any response.
We have saved more than 5000 dogs so far, and we need this campaign to succeed so we can continue saving all the dogs in need and taking care of our 200 dogs."
When a campaign fails, Animal Webaction cannot deliver the products. The beneficiary doesn't receive anything and the buyers are refunded.
