Animal Webaction visited the site 07 April 2021 and confirms the situation described below.
"The number of dogs has increased, together with our expenses. We currently have 53 dogs in our care, although 20 of them have to be kept in boarding kennels as there is no space to properly host more dogs at the shelter right now. And we therefore also care for the street dogs we cannot rescue.
Around 90% of the incoming dogs are sick, demanding several months of therapy. Unfortunately, we have to ration their food very often now because donations have decreased drastically since the pandemic. We have only one bag of food left, and we are running out of options.
I am under stress all the time, I fear that some of them won't survive. The situation is urgent, there is no food, no money... the global crisis is taking its toll everywhere, and the abandoned dogs are among its victims."
"The situation for street dogs is horrible, without exaggeration. Every day, you can see new abandoned dogs appear in Čoka, and the situation is even worse in Serbia as a whole... Many strays are poisoned, mutilated, tortured, or killed in other cruel ways.
At the same time as more dogs are abandoned, we also see a dramatic decrease in adoptions. Over the last 12 months, only three of our dogs were adopted... It is doubtable that this will improve any time soon, and in the meantime, the streets are filling up with stray dogs that we cannot host at the shelter...
These dogs depend on us. If we have to stop feeding them because we run out of kibble, they will die for sure. For me personally, that would be devastating, even though you get used to everything through the long period of stress and fear on daily basis."
"Žućka is two years old and has been with us in the shelter for six months now. She was found on the road after she had been hit by a car. She was in a life-threatening situation: she had massive head trauma, her legs were broken, and she couldn’t move...
She is better now, we are providing for her and she is happy, but she is still under therapy and can't move properly though. Also, we recently discovered that she suffers from heartworm, a parasitic disease very difficult to cure. Nutrition and vitamins are crucial for her, and without kibble, she will not be able to make it."
"There were much more donation before the pandemic. It is getting harder to raise money, even for the minimum amount of food and medicines needed. We also have to use funds for bottled water for the dogs, since the tap water is contaminated.
The pandemic has not only affected the donations, but also driven up the costs for dog food. With the borders closed, the cheaper food we used to buy from the flea market cannot be imported anymore, so we have to pay double the price for kibble instead.
We pay a monthly fee for the 20 dogs at the boarding kennel, which is an additional strain. I try to stay positive, but for the first time, I am starting to lose that positive attitude..."
"This whole thing began when my mom and I started to save stray dogs and pay for their boarding kennel expenses. That soon became too expensive to keep up, so we decided to start a shelter. The name of the shelter, 'Lina', comes from a very special dog -- the first dog we took to our shelter.
It has been seven years now, and under that name and in this house, we are saving a lot of dogs and other animals. We save them from being slaughtered and we take care of them.
We are fully committed to the shelter. There is no private life, no plans with friends, no casual coffees. During these past years, a few hundred dogs have found a home thanks to our shelter, and that is something."
Animal Webaction has a logistics centre directly in Serbia, which enables us to intervene quickly and deliver kibble.
"Our funds mainly come from our partner organisations and individuals abroad, but it is not enough to cover the needs. We have reached out to all relevant organisations for additional help, but the pandemic is a global issue and has affected everybody, so they are unable to help for now.
We have conducted several online fundraising campaigns, but we quickly noticed that that doesn’t work in Serbia... We received nothing. Our foreign fundraising campaigns work better, but even so, we never receive enough for the growing needs."
When a campaign fails, Animal Webaction cannot deliver the products. The beneficiary doesn't receive anything and the buyers are refunded.
