Animal Webaction visited the site 16 April 2021 and confirms the situation described below.
"We currently house 43 dogs at the shelter. We save dogs from the street and the local pound, where they would otherwise be euthanised within 14 days. We therefore have to rescue dogs and find adoptive families for them at a very high pace. Since the beginning of this year, we have managed 110 adoptions. Unfortunately, for every adopted dog, there are always many more to take their place.
As a consequence, we need more and more kibble, while we try to find them all new homes, but we cannot keep up with the demand. We now only have kibble for three days left... A lack of kibble may lead to food aggression and fights, causing injuries and even severe illness and death!
To be honest, I feel disheartened. Not knowing for sure that I’ll be able to provide for these dogs is painful to me. I fear that the lack of kibble, combined with the increasing number of dogs being abandoned lately, will lead to a terrible situation... We really need this campaign to succeed."
"The general situation in Orastie is currently rather dire. There has been a wave of abandonment in the last months... Only today, we found 16 abandoned puppies. The street dogs are hunted by dogcatchers and brought to the local pound.
The local pound is overpopulated and has strict food rations, leaving the dogs in a bad condition. Within 14 days, they will then be euthanised. The only way we can stop that from happening, is if we find adoptive families for them directly, or if we take them to our shelter.
If we don't find more kibble, the strays at the local pound will suffer the most, as we won't be able to take in more dogs at our shelter... I feel worried, scared even..."
"Tara was going to be euthanized in the local pound. We don't know her history, and where she was captured, but we rescued her in March and took her to the shelter.
Like most of the dogs who have arrived from the pound, Tara was traumatized and malnourished. It's heartbreaking for us to see how desperate they are for food when we get them. They eat desperately for several days, until they realize that they are not going to starve...
Tara is still anxious and traumatized, although she is starting to make progress. She needs kibble to continue her recovery, as well as getting over her past traumas."
"We used to receive more donations, either money or dog food, but things have changed due to the pandemic. Over the past six months, donations have been continuously decreasing... they are very scarce now.
We use our own personal money to fund the association and compensate for the lack of donations, but it is not enough. We have been borrowing money and making debts to buy food, and we don't have the means to keep doing that.
My main fears are that we’ll run out of both food and willing volunteers to take care of the dogs. The restrictions during the pandemic have made people fearful, and fewer people are willing to help with volunteer work at the shelter now. Neither I nor my husband are young anymore, we'd really need a helping hand."
"Our association has been saving animals since 2009. It has been a long journey, which has required sacrifices of both time and money from my husband and me. It has been worth every single minute though, because we love our animals.
Our actions are truly needed. We’re the only association that neuters and spays the local stray dogs and we try our best to keep them off the street and to make sure they’re fed and taken care of. This is an extreme effort and we need all the help we can get in dealing with this situation!
All I hope is that our efforts in spaying, neutering, feeding, and taking care of local strays, will eventually lead to much fewer abandoned dogs."
Animal Webaction has a logistic platform in Romania, which allows us to intervene quickly and deliver kibble.
"We have a support system in France helping us carry out adoptions and raise funds for kibble. It is thanks to this community effort that we manage to have so many dogs adopted across many countries. Despite this help, we simply can no longer keep up with the shelter's expenses.
We have tried reaching out to other organisations, but they could not help us. It seems like everyone else is facing similar issues, due to the pandemic. Online fundraising is something we constantly attempt, but it is not as successful as we need it to be."
When a campaign fails, Animal Webaction cannot deliver the products. The organizer doesn't receive anything and the buyers are refunded.
