Animal Webaction visited the site 24 April 2021 and confirms the situation described below.
"I have been volunteering at the public pound since it was opened by the City Hall. Although we do our best to improve dogs' living conditions, puppies brought over there are more vulnerable and at risk than grown-up dogs, they need adapted care, food and protection.
That is why I am always trying to get them out to safety: I am currently hosting 50 of them in three different places, outside the pound. Puppy kibble is the biggest issue, though, as I have to rely only on donations to fund it, and those have kept dropping as the pandemic has set in durably.
If I hadn’t fought for my puppies, they wouldn’t have got fed until now. However, despite all my efforts, I only have kibble for a few days and I will soon be left with no food at all. This is killing me. These puppies need kibble to become strong, it is the most important need they have."
"We do free spaying every month, but things are getting worse and worse nonetheless. It is a never-ending story, people are reluctant to bring their dogs and spay them, but then they have puppies and they leave them on the streets!
I never know when I will find some litter in a box at the pound's gate, or when I will get a phone call to go get some puppies from who knows where. Many are left near trash cans, in the fields, in the woods, in parking lots, on the side of the road, etc.
Right now, we have a few puppies that didn’t even open their eyes. They are still fed by their mums, but once they start eating dry food, they will need enough to be able to grow up! I fear I will not be able to find any, and that they will just die."
"We found young Brownie injured, all alone on the side of the road. Someone had cut his tail off and abandoned him. We had to take him to the vet to prevent further damage and infection to his tail.
Although it looks healed now, we can say it is still sensitive as Brownie won't allow us near it. He is still vulnerable, kibble will help him to recover fully."
"Before the pandemic, I always managed to raise some money when I needed it. Now people have stopped donating, either they don’t have any money left or they need to care for their own families first.
As for the City Hall, they already help cover part of the adult dogs' needs at the public pound, they can't cover food for puppies in my care. And since I don't have any sponsors either, I struggle with getting puppies kibble.
I beg leftovers to restaurants with no success and donations to friends who cannot keep up. If the pandemic goes on like this, I won't have anything left to feed my puppies because there will be no more donations at all."
"Initially, I started feeding street dogs on my own, I was like a crazy lady feeding strays with no help, really! Then the City Hall funded the pound and I offered some help and worked hard to turn bare cement walls into a more welcoming place.
Eventually, one day, I brought a single puppy home, then a second one, and then more and more got here. Puppies need to be cared for, sheltered, sterilised, they need a loving place to live and lots of daily love — as much as I would like to hug each and everyone of them, they are too many and I can't do it by myself...
Whenever I receive pictures of puppies that got adopted, and see how happy they are in their new homes, it feels amazing and it makes me really proud."
