Animal Webaction visited the site 23 April 2021 and confirms the situation described below.
"We have 264 dogs at the shelter, the most pressing, constant issue is lack of food.
At the moment there’s hardly any dry food left, this amount will be enough for two days only, and we have only a bit of porridge to make do for a few days after that. We can endure cold, lack of place to accommodate dogs, other problems, but not malnutrition. Everything except food and water is a matter of comfort, but food absence is a matter of life and death.
I'm afraid the dogs will have nothing to eat, I don't even want to think about it. Despite all the difficulties since the pandemic, I've never thought about leaving the shelter, I've never given anybody up, I feel fully responsible for the fate of these dogs. They are like my children, my family, I can't let them starve. This campaign is my only hope, I pray for it to succeed."
"The upcoming months will bring many issues on the street as it is : the number of puppies found outside usually increases sharply in spring and summer ; tourists will arrive, which means more cars, which in turn means more injured animals. And in summer the animal can lie in the heat up to 35°C. The wounds become easily inflamed, with flies, maggots, mites, etc, it is harder to cure them.
If the lack of food continues, we will not only be unable to help these new dogs in distress, but we'll also have no other choice than to let the shelter's dogs go in the streets, as food is vital for them. But there are so many, and some are invalids, or too young or too old to survive on their own. Their fate would be uncertain, it would be a catastrophe."
"We found Agat in a small cemetary in the countryside. Somebody brought him here to die, his leg was smashed, and he was extremely thin.
He is a young and sweet dog of only 1 year old. His leg is a bit better now and he can stand on it, but he needs food to recover and gain strength, as he is still just skin and bones."
"Donations have not increased, we receive support from time to time, periodically and it doesn't change the situation fundamentally. We fund our shelter with the money and necessities donated by those people who are not indifferent to the shelter’s problems, but the help we receive is irregular, while the shelter's needs and issues are permanent: 24/7 our dogs need to eat, suffer from diseases, need a cure, need to find families, etc...
Before the pandemics I used to earn enough to pay the bills and buy food, even without help. But as a concert manager, I've been unable to work for months and lost my source of income. Now I am broke, and many people around here don't see the point in spending money on abandonned dogs, even though they could help. Other volunteers don't earn a lot either.
We have big debts in clinics, we are out of kibbles, and the shelter is on its last legs, we need help."
"It’s a hard job, working in the shelter, both physically and mentally. Barking, treating ill animals, inability to work with different animals and cope with their characters – these are the reasons which demotivate fledgling volunteers.
Some find it hard to see animals suffering, but it’s a part of our everyday battle, animals are vulnerable and treating them is hard, some can’t be saved. But we still try our best every time."
Animal Webaction has a logistics platform in Russia, which enables us to intervene quickly and deliver kibbles.
"We post online when we need something urgently, this can help pay our debt for one animal in question, or find wood, or a specific medicine for example. And most of the time people who visit the shelter bring something we need, some donate money as well, but this amount can hardly cover our expenses.
We’ve been helped by kind French people with vaccines, medicine, veterinarian kibbles. The organisation Alerte SOS helps with finding families, moving dogs abroad etc... Currently we have less dogs than we used to have 6 months ago, we have some new ones, but a lot happily found their homes. We are really grateful to those French people who lent us a hand.
We write to different organisations and welcome help, but at the moment no major one took patronage over the shelter. We don’t know who else would be willing to help us with kibbles."
When a campaign fails, Animal Webaction cannot deliver the products. The beneficiary doesn't receive anything and the buyers are refunded.
