1. In Romania, Elena will soon run out of kibble to feed the 34 dogs at her shelter. They are already not eating enough, and they will starve if nobody intervenes!
"I have 34 dogs at the shelter at the moment. I saved most of them from a certain death: they were either going to be killed by authorities or die from injuries or illness. However, because of the pandemic, I don't have the means to feed them anymore... Donations have dropped drastically, and I lost my job.
The dogs already don’t eat enough. For two weeks now, I have had to ration the kibble and stretch it with bread to make it last longer. The dogs have started to get sick due to this lack of kibble. Today, I have only 10 bags left, which will last us five days...
It’s very important for me to be able to save them and take care of them. I try as much as possible to give them at least the minimum, but I don’t know until when I will be able to continue. I don’t even want to think about what will happen if I run out of kibble..."
2. Ursulet was born without eyes and recently diagnosed with epilepsy. He's sick and suffering, and a lack of kibble will only make his condition worse.
"Ursulet is a three-year-old male, I got him from a farmer when he was only two months old. He was born without eyes, and six months ago, he was diagnosed with epilepsy. He is currently under treatment for that.
Unfortunately, due to his health issues, he can get aggressive with other dogs, and even me, when he does not have enough food. That is a big worry, it is essential that I have kibble to feed him, to keep him calm and to prevent his condition from getting worse."
3. The street dogs who rely on Elena are not eating their fill either, they risk starving or getting killed if she doesn't find kibble soon.
"The situation for street dogs in my area has gotten worse, the source of food in the streets has diminished. They are counting on the kibble I provide and I don't want to leave them starving. The little I have, I share with them... But I already cannot give them enough and they are not eating their fill.
If the street dogs stay without food for long, they will start going to people’s houses to eat their poultry. In response, people will poison them, beat them, kill them. Without kibble, the dogs will pretty much be killed due to their behaviour."
4. The pandemic has cost Elena her job and deprived her of donations. Heavily indebted, she has no money to buy kibble.
"A year ago, I lost my job. I’m now left without financial support... I can barely support myself, let alone provide for the dogs. That is why I have to ask for help, but, unfortunately, there has also been a considerable drop in donations. I believe that this is because of the pandemic... many people have lost their jobs, they earn less.
The pandemic has also influenced adoption rates very much, they have decreased considerably. I recently managed to get some dogs adopted with the help of a French association, but there are still too many abandoned dogs, and I don't have enough kibble to feed them.
I have debts to the vet. At the moment, I owe them over 500 euros, and I have no means to pay them back... I cannot manage, it is really important that we receive help so that we can provide for the dogs."
5. Elena isn't asking for money, but for kibble to keep the dogs from starving.
"I started out in 2006, rescuing dogs from the streets, together with other associations. We sterilized the dogs and took them to private shelters. In 2008, I sold my apartment in Bucharest and bought the land here in Gruiu, where I built my house that I eventually had to transform into a shelter.
I started bringing dogs in that were going to be killed by the authorities. I saved as many as I could. I treated them and gave them up for adoption. My help is important for them, I feed them, and I take care of them, for example when they have been hit by cars.
This is my greatest accomplishment. I have managed to save many animals and they have had a good life with me. I’m very happy about that. I take care of them as well as I can."
6. If this campaign is successful, Elena will not receive any money, but 1800 kg of kibble, delivered from the Animal Webaction logistics centre in Romania.

7. Help from local supermarkets has diminished since the pandemic, and online fundraisers don't raise enough money... This campaign is Elena's last option.
"I have an agreement with a supermarket, they give me kibble that is about to expire. This is my only source of food. However, their contribution has decreased because of the pandemic: they order less food to keep costs down, and therefore there is less left for us as well. I also had another arrangement with a different supermarket, but they've cancelled it completely.
I have tried to reach out to other organizations for help with food. But they already have other cases that are a priority for them, therefore, my requests have not been successful. We publish calls for help and fundraisers on Facebook, but we are not able to raise enough money to cover our expenses."
8. Campaigns launched on Animal Webaction often fail.

9. In Romania, it is difficult to find funds for kibble, there are no grants, no foundations... Many abandoned dogs die alone in the streets, in complete indifference...
