Animal Webaction visited the site 20 May 2021 and confirms the situation described below.
"The situation for street cats is catastrophic. In my 10 years here, I have actually never seen a situation as catastrophic as it is now... There are fewer and fewer donations, less and less food, and more and more indifference and poisoning...
At the moment, I take care of more than 70 street cats. Their portions have always been rationed, I have no choice, and now I have no kibble left at all. A cat that doesn't eat is a cat that will be killed. They will get hit by a car when they are looking for food, or they will be easy prey for other animals when they are weak and sick.
It's very simple, if this campaign doesn't succeed, I won't find two or three cats dead every day, but dozens. Not feeding them is putting them in danger... I feel worried, angry, enraged, confused... I can't sleep in fact. I need a solution..."
"Ticoeur was born in a church, he is only six months old. He has had a hard time feeding, he is very malnourished and thin. This malnutrition has weakened him and made him easy prey for other animals.
He is now in a very bad condition... He has wounds everywhere, and he is aggressive with everyone. He is very sick and hardly moves... If I can't give him any kibble, he will die quickly..."
"I host 38 cats in total. These are cats that were too sick and would not have survived on the street. They were all suffering from severe malnutrition and dehydration, so I had to rescue them to feed them at fixed times.
All these cats are serious cases... I try to feed them as best as I can, to socialise them, and then to get them adopted as quickly as possible, even if it's not always easy...
If I can't feed them, they'll start to fight... it becomes infernal. It will also harm their immune system and their socialization... Basically, not feeding them is bringing them back to street conditions... They wouldn't survive that."
"Olaf is about five years old, I took him in last November. He was in a terrible state, his jaw was broken, his eye and nose were badly injured... He had to undergo four operations.
It is necessary for him to have his ration every day, otherwise he resumes his street habits and starts fighting with other cats, which will lead to further injuries..."
"Donations have dropped dramatically since the pandemic. People are in need, many have lost their jobs... I receive messages from former donors who apologise for not being able to help me anymore, all because of the crisis.
I pay for everything with my personal funds... I work from 8am to 6pm every day, but my salary is so low that I can barely pay my own bills... in the end I have nothing left... I even have debts to pet shops and vets, I owe them three times my salary.
The pandemic has also made it difficult to adopt cats because the borders are closed. I currently have five cats waiting to go to their new homes. When my cats are not well, I get sick... I feed them long before I eat myself, and that's a reality."
"The association was created in July 2019, but I have been a volunteer for the animal cause in Morocco for 10 years, after living in France for 30 years. In fact, when I saw the distress of the animals, that's what made me stay here in Morocco instead of returning to France. I preferred to stay and help them.
My action is necessary because these cats need to get out of the street, they need a home and food to escape the danger that threatens them, especially the abuse.
Let's not forget that a sick cat can be a danger to humans, so it is important to take care of these cats to protect human life at the same time. It's a big responsibility and a lot of work that one person can't do alone, but I try to do my best."
Animal Webaction has a logistic platform in Morocco, which allows us to intervene quickly and deliver kibble throughout the country.
"I've launched online fundraisers and I sell items, like furniture and boxes, created by a friend in France, but we have very few returns. I don't have any subsidies. I have three donors who help me a little bit, but it's not enough, unfortunately.
The authorities don't help, they just poison and kill the cats... There is simply no structure that is willing to help, especially in Marrakech. Even when I go to buy kibble and I tell them it's for an association, it's useless, I get almost no discount.
I have a really hard time finding kibble, I beg left and right for it to be given to me on credit, if at all possible. It's much harder since the pandemic because pet shops get their supplies from abroad... with the restrictions, prices have gone up enormously."
When a campaign fails, Animal Webaction cannot deliver the collected products, the organizer receives nothing and the buyers get a refund.
