Animal Webaction visited the site 15 June 2021 and confirms the situation described below.
"Our association has been feeding and sterilising 1000 stray dogs in Tanger for many years as part of its "Hayat" program. We never got any public help, only personal support from close friends and dog lovers. There were many, once, but since the pandemic has hit, donations have become very scarce.
As a result, we are finding ourselves in a lot of trouble. We can no longer afford sterilisation operations because we need to focus on food, and even so we will soon be unable to feed all of the strays: we have got only one week of kibble left for dogs on the streets.
When we started intervening, street dogs were starving, they were getting sick and they were dying from the lack of food. I fear that one day I will wake up and find myself in that same situation again, and be unable to save them from death. They deserve a good life, they have rights, too! It would be so very sad."
"Ness is still a young dog, he is not even a year and a half old. I first met him on the streets and realised he had leishmaniasis. I brought him to the vet who prescribed some treatment, then brought him back to the street as I simply could not accomodate him.
But living conditions on the streets were so bad that the disease actually worsened despite the medicine, and his condition was not getting any better. There was no way I could leave him to die, so I have now isolated him and I am keeping him safe, but he will need food to stand the medicine and to get strength to fight the disease."
"I have got 450 dogs at the SFT Sanctuary. I would like to take all strays in, however our means are limited so we rescue primarily those in poor health. Several of these dogs are in critical condition, they are in desperate need of food and care.
If we can't find a way to feed them, their health problems will worsen, which can lead to death. Healthier dogs will also develop diseases, leading to vet expenses spiraling out of control!
I get up every day and see all the dogs that once were rescued welcoming me, it is a very nice feeling. So much love and peace from these innocent animals. With no food, all this would collapse: the dogs are my babies and I can't leave them to starve."
"Nobel is a 5-year-old Rottweiler. His owner used him for dog fighting, until Nobel lost a fight and the owner decided to leave him bleeding to death on the sanctuary's doorstep. His paw had been bitten and half-eaten by another dog, he had lost both sight and hearing, he was exhausted.
Up to this day, he have had trust issues with humans and other dogs, he likes to sit alone most of the time. He could not live again a situation where he would have to compete with other dogs, over food for instance."
"I have no other source of funding than donations, but with everyone getting busy with the covid-19 vaccination, the support of people and other organisations is almost non-existent and there is a clear lack of donors.
I no longer have the power to buy food because the expenses for the sanctuary are too high. The unpaid vet bills and the oustanding rents are accumulating, they get bigger every day and have reached unspeakable amounts.
We have had to establish our sanctuary here, in a country without a dog culture, because they are a lot of animals in need. It is a challenge in itself because the State does not support our actions, and we can only rely on your help, on donors' help."
"At a very young age, I witnessed the abuse of dogs by other children and I decided I would protect them as a grown-up. I was able to achieve this dream when I opened the SFT sanctuary. The project “Hayat” gave positive results. We have educated children, raised their awareness about street dogs, and changed their negative outlook. People are starting to accept dogs, sometimes feeding them too.
However, the state has repeatedly refused our requests for an agreement to sterilise and rescue dogs rather than put them down. They have even recently slaughtered more than a hundred dogs because there were too many on the streets. I am fighting against that: I want to protect all the dogs in my country, and I want to make a life where dogs and humans can live in harmony."
