Animal Webaction visited the site 20 June 2021 and confirms the situation described below.
"L'Arche de Noé feeds about fifty street dogs in several districts, from the city centre to the main ring roads. It's one thing to have stray animals, another to have them living in deplorable or dangerous conditions without anything to eat, that's something we just can't accept.
It is therefore crucial that we distribute kibble so that these animals can eat a little, as people don't feel concerned about stray dogs and don't feed them. However, with drastic health controls in place at the borders and businesses at a standstill, we are still waiting in vain for things to pick up: the dogs are rationed and we have had to reduce the number of feeding points, as there are no tourists, restaurant owners or donors to support us.
It's a nightmare, we're at the end of our rope, we can see that we're not making any progress, which is depressing. At the moment, we can only manage for four days with the remaining kibble, after which we won't be able to feed the dogs at all."
"At the moment, the shelter is well over a hundred dogs. We have just had to rescue the strays from Marrakech city centre, as we were advised that the municipality was going to slaughter them. We are keeping them safe for a few weeks until the situation is resolved, but we won't be able to keep them.
With all these dogs to feed in addition to the usual ones, believe me, we no longer know how to cope... We have to calculate the amount of food we give each dog according to their age and weight, then to reduce that amount so that they don't suffer too much if there is a shortage!
And if there is one, we will have to implement an even stricter policy, where we will only take care of dogs in great distress, keep them in for two or three days, while they are being treated, and then put them back on the street. I find myself with a lot of doubts, wondering whether all our efforts have been wasted.
"Lucas has only been in the shelter for a week… We found him alone, wandering on some road in a catastrophic state. He is infested with ticks and is very badly affected by ringworm. We don't know exactly what has happened to him, but he is quite frightened and hasn't got used to humans yet.
Lucas is on an anti-fungal treatment which he will have to take for a long while. He will need time to get back on his feet, as well as regular, nutritious meals to keep him going while he recovers, or the disease will eventually kill him."
"An association can't run without funding, it is its lifeblood. We have to pay for sterilisations, care, vaccinations, emergency interventions as well as for regular treatments, and of course we have to buy food for everyone…
But between unemployment and poverty for some, and the holidays coming up for others, people have other things to think about, and donations are far from enough. We would so much like to have regular patrons, and for each of our 6,000 subscribers to put in one euro per month, but it seems to be a lost cause and we are stuck.
Even my professional activity has come to a halt: I used to work in tourism and some customers supported me. Now there is no more money coming in, there is no help, and we are not going to be able to keep going like this forever… Our debts to suppliers are already spread out to the limit; we just can't plan ahead in these conditions."
"I have been involved in animal welfare in Marrakech for seven years, and I have had the shelter for three years. The dogs are safe here, and we also offer a dignified end to life to those who are suffering the most, so that they can go in good conditions.
In Morocco, the problem of stray dogs remains unresolved, as too many municipalities still prefer to spend money on slaughter rather than on sterilisation and vaccination. However, laws do exist to protect dogs... They just need to be enforced, and that's the problem.
Of course, all is not lost: from time to time, the police force calls us to take care of an injured animal, or they help us directly by buying food and distributing water. I dream about global awareness and clear policies that will drive the animal cause forward. In short, a collective awakening."
Animal Webaction has a logistic platform in Morocco, which allows us to intervene quickly and deliver kibbles.
"We get some help from a French association and we rely on loans and donations from our relatives, because from Morocco, everything is complicated. Some websites refuse to help us because we are in the Maghreb, and Paypal and Teaming are only available through European intermediaries.
In any case, our online fundraiser amounted to 50 euros in May and only 15 euros for June; and on Teaming, we receive 75 euros per month, which is far from enough!
Without this collection, I tell you, the future of the Arche de Noé will be threatened. The success of the collection will be essential, because we won't be able to feed the dogs without it and it will then be impossible for us to carry on."
When a campaign fails, Animal Webaction cannot deliver the products. The beneficiary doesn't receive anything and the buyers are refunded.
