Animal Webaction visited the site 26 June 2021 and confirms the situation described below.
"The number of dogs that need help has definitely increased lately. We used to find 1-2 dogs in distress every month, but now we find dogs every single day. Many of them are tied to trees and abandonned in the mountains...
In addition to a peak in abandonments, the pandemic has also brought a sharp decrease in donations. There is simply no money and we don't receive any permanent help when it comes to food. We've only managed to get by so far by buying lower quality kibble, but today we have nothing left.
It's awful. I am terribly stressed. My main concern is that the most fragile dogs will be the first ones to take the hit. If some days we may not be able to buy a specific pill for lack of funds, it's okay, but with food, we cannot skip a day. There is nothing worse than not being able to feed the dogs, because food is what keeps them well..."
"The situation on the streets is very messy, it's a situation of despair... That's all I can say to explain it. Everyday, we get called for new abandonment cases or for puppies that are ill. We've virtually never found a dog on the streets that was in good health condition. The situation is hopeless and the town doesn't help at all...
Summertime is here and we know from experience that the number of abandoned dogs will even increase in the next few months, as many people will go on their vacation and leave their pet behind. The worst period is coming for dogs, and as much I would like to bring them all to the shelter, I can't, the number of strays that need help is too big.
We need help to be able to continue feeding them and give these dogs a second chance at life, because if we don't, no one else will... The longer dogs stay on the streets, the more they are at risk to end up sick, beaten up or poisoned. That would be the worst possible scenario, and my biggest worry..."
"Choco is a 2-year-old male, we've had him at the shelter for around 2 weeks. We found him in the mountain, completely by accident. He was dehydrated, you could tell that he hadn't eaten or drank anything for a while, honestly, he was close to die from starvation. He couldn't even stand, I tried to help him but he kept falling down...
For some reason that we haven't been able to establish yet, he is also blind. He's under treatment now and is only just starting to recover and adapt to his new environment, although he is still gets scared very easily. After all, no one really knows what hardships he went through...Food for him is absolutely vital to be able to heal completely and recover. He won't be able to survive without it."
"We are in a very difficult spot right now financially speaking. We conduct online fundraising, but the few donations we do get from it usually enable us to buy food for 1 or 2 day only, never enough to buy food for the dogs on a long term basis.
We are indebted to everyone, we have a huge debt to the vet's, the food supplier... And even though we chip in with our own salaries, it's still not enough to cover all the expenses.
Our need for food is incredibly great, we are in a desperate situation. My fear is that at some point we really won't be able to continue what we are doing and the dogs will die because of it. "
"My husband and I have been involved in animal protection for many years. We used to be members of an Animal welfare union in Kozani, but the union eventually closed and the fate of the animals became uncertain. When this happened, we were faced with 2 possibilities : release the dogs back on the streets, or take them all and try to find them adopters. We chose the 2nd option and came here to the shelter.
We don't want to keep all the animals here forever, we want to give them the opportunity to have a better life. We want to take them, cure them from any diseases and then after being healthy, give them for adoptions.
Over the years, we've managed to give many dogs for adoption. This makes us extremely happy, and we know that they are in good hands, because we keep in touch with the majority of people that adopted our dogs. Despite this good news, the number of dogs in need remains high and we need help to continue caring for them."
Animal Webaction has a logistic centre in Greece, which enables us to intervene quickly and deliver kibbles.
"Ever since the pandemic, things have been more difficult. People can't donate as much in comparison with before. Every day there are more and more businesses that are closing. Many people don't know if they'll still have a job tomorrow, so they don't give money so easily, and that's totally understanble.
I tried to reach out to an organisation abroad, but we had no outcome from this, they didn't even reply to us. I don't know why, perhaps they have too many requests and can't help everyone, I am not sure.
We don't receive much local help with the shelter in respect to the shelter, and we're not sure how the local population perceives us either and how much our actions are appreciated, but I want to believe that people respect it deep down. We are making a huge difference for these dogs and I hope people can see that, and perhaps even decide to help."
When a campaign fails, Animal Webaction cannot deliver the collected products, the organizer receives nothing and the buyers are refunded.
