Animal Webaction visited the site 20 June 2021 and confirms the situation described below.
"I feed around 50 dogs spread in different locations across the city at the moment. The amount of homeless dogs has increased for sure, with the pandemic people lost their jobs and had no resources for their pets, that's how many dogs were left by their owners. Very few people are those with understanding and tolerance for these dogs unfortunately...
There are so many of them, I cannot manage to feed them all. I only have 40 kg of kibble left, which is enough for a couple of days more only. I already have to give them less food, I try to visit less places and leave there a little less food, so I can share what's left with more dogs...I feel very sad, I wish I could feed everyone.
The situation is becoming scary, we ran out of resources, we are not going to manage here without help, I feel terrible thinking about it actually. Those dogs on the street will be left on their own, alone and hungry. Ill and weak dogs will probably die, more of the dogs will become desperate and sometimes aggressive... My biggest fear is for them to die of starvation, be killed by the local population, or put down by the institutions. We are really desperate for food here."
"Anja is around 3 or 4 years old, she was taken to the public shelter while only skin and bones. After she was spayed, she was put back in town, and she stays near the public shelter as she now knows I go there to feed the dogs as well, so that she will therefore get a meal too.
It's very dangerous on the streets, dogs risk to be hit by cars, or get poisoned by someone, people regularly try to kill these dogs with poisoned food. They rely on us to stay fed and healthy."
" These dogs are completly dependent on me feeding them, but everyone eats less now, I’m just trying to share the food among dogs equally. I fear having to abandon some of the dogs due to lack of resources, because I cannot keep them locked up if I can't provide proper care and food for them... for me it would be a disaster.
I'm concerned the most about finding food and home for them. I am also afraid that there will be less and less adoptions, because of lack of food and nutrition in dogs diet, these dogs won't be healthy enough to be adopted as I get them adopted mainly abroad.
I don't want to say I lost all hope, but the situation looks bad overall and not getting much better any time soon I think. On the other hand, when I see the result with some dogs getting proper home and care, this motivates me to keep going."
"The pandemic started a chain reaction, that was triggered from many lost jobs and unstable incomes, that led to more rare and not consistent donations which have affected my rescues. Providing vaccines for every new dog, catching dogs to spay them, and providing them all with the needed medical treatments is a lot to manage. But the main issue is lack of food, it applies to both street dogs and those hosted.
Over the last year, I gave to adoption around 140 / 150 dogs, mostly abroad.... With these two hands of mine, 140+ is pretty good. But I need help to keep going.
With one Macedonian salary, it really is difficult and my actions are limited, I simply cannot buy kibble. I have plenty of debts to the vet and the food supplier already... I feel like I am alone in the middle of the sea, alone and out of energy."
"I always loved animals, and I started doing this when I was 14 years old. At the beginning I used to bring dogs at my house with my parents, sometimes there could be like 50 dogs there... Everyone thought that I was wasting time and that I should keep studying instead, but I decided to risk and stop my studies, so I could have more time to save these dogs.
There are more dogs on the street than before, and also here in Macedonia there is almost no effort put to educate people about this problem. More dogs are left on the streets, and not enough actions from the authorities are being taken.
There is a lot of work to do, I wish to see much bigger results in the future. My biggest motivation is seeing some pictures of adopted dogs who found a home and someone to love them. I hope that people will get more aware of thise problem, and if they cannot help the dogs, at least they shouldn't make things worst"
Animal Webaction has a logistics centre in Macedonia, still active despite the pandemic, which enables us to intervene quickly and deliver kibbles.
"I don't have any local help, some people might just say "good job" to me but that really doesn't help much at this moment. This is kind of a small country, and people are not that wealthy to do something so we can fix this problem. To me it looks like our rescue organisations do more for the municipality than the municipality does for us.
Lately, I've only received help from abroad, for which I am extremely grateful. We have a fundraising group on Facebook, but it isn't enough. I've tried to find help to get more dogs adopted, but I am not informed about any organisation to get help with food, I do not know how to find such help.
I notice there are organisations which put a lot of efforts in having dogs adopted abroad, and that gives me a little hope that at least some of these dogs are going to have a future somewhere."
